Defensive Driving Tips

The key to being a safe driver is to operate your vehicle defensively. By leaning to the side of caution, you can significantly reduce your chances of being involved in a dangerous, high-speed automobile accident. While you cannot control the actions of others, you can behave in a safe and alert manner yourself. Not only will this radically lower your risk of suffering from an auto wreck, but it will lower others’ chances of being involved in one, as well.

Defensive driving is a practice that is heavily promoted by the National Safety Council. The idea behind this principle is that drivers should strive to not only follow the rules of the road, but also foresee any potentially dangerous situations that may arise. This way, they will be prepared for just about anything, and can best avoid accident situations.

Some tips for driving defensively include:

  • Always pay attention to what is going on around you. Check your mirrors frequently and note drivers that are behaving erratically, aggressively, or otherwise dangerously.
  • Be prepared for the worst situation. Don’t let this scare you into being a timid driver; simply keep this notion in the back of your mind so you won’t ever be caught fully off-guard.
  • Follow all traffic rules, including signals and speed limits
  • Practice safe driving techniques, such as using the turn signal and leaving a cushion between your car and the one in front of you.
  • Yield to other drivers, even if you have the right-of-way. Too many people don’t pay attention to what they are doing, and they often cut off other drivers.

Though taking these steps will not completely eliminate your chances of being in an accident, they will significantly lessen your risk.
