Maintaining Your Tires

It is important to keep tires properly inflated and maintained to ensure proper vehicle functioning and to decrease the risk of preventable accidents. Tire malfunctions can occur because of damaged tires or those inflated to the wrong level, which can in turn cause accidents as well as other problems for motorists.

It is important to keep your tires in good condition. When monitoring the condition of your tires, keep the following in mind:

  • Tire pressure is the most important aspect of tire maintenance. Check your tire pressure once every month with a tire pressure gauge. Measure the tire pressure at a time when tires are cold, meaning that they have not been driven on for at least three hours.
  • Inflate your tires to the level designated in your vehicle owner’s manual or on the vehicle placard posted on the vehicle door edge, glove compartment, or interior trunk lid. The number printed on the side of the tire is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, not the optimal tire pressure for your vehicle.
  • Never measure the air in your tires simply by looking. It is very difficult to tell the difference between a properly-inflated, over-inflated, or under-inflated tire without an accurate tire pressure gauge.
  • Each month, evaluate the condition of the tread and sidewall of your tires for damage. If the treads seem to be wearing unevenly, your wheels may not be properly aligned. Take your vehicle to an experienced mechanic who can rotate and align your tires.
