Deer-related car crashes expected to increase due to mating season

Deer mating season is fast approaching, and public safety officials are expressing concern over deer-related car accidents.

In 2010, fourteen people in Brown County were killed in deer-related car accidents.  The number of deer-related car accidents increased from 2009 to 2010, and wildlife officials have stated that October-November is one of the two peak times for deer-related car accidents to occur because of mating season.

According to Jeff Pritzl, district wildlife supervisor for the northeast region of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, “Deer will be on the move literally 24 hours a day in search of a receptive doe who is ready to breed.”
