State Patrol Strives to Prevent Truck Accidents with "Operation Safe Driver"

The Wisconsin State Patrol motor carrier inspectors and their law enforcement partners across the state will participate in Operation Safe Driver, in an effort to prevent traffic crashes involving large trucks and other commercial vehicles.

The mission of Operation Safe Driver, which is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, is to improve the behavior, habits, and decision making of commercial vehicle operators through safety law enforcement and education. State Patrol Capt. Charles Lorentz of the Motor Carrier Enforcement Section said the initiative focuses on poor driving habits. “Bad driving behavior causes the vast majority of traffic crashes,” Lorentz said. “Lives can be saved and injuries prevented by reducing irresponsible and dangerous behavior like speeding, tailgating, and aggressive driving.”

Operation Safe Driver encourages State Patrol inspectors to crack down on violations such as improper lane changes, speeding, failure to obey traffic signs, and following too close. Commercial motor vehicle driver will be checked for compliance with license requirements and house of service standards.
