Toyota Announces Recall of 1.7M Vehicles

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced a global recall of nearly 1.7 million vehicles.

The company announced an estimated 245,000 Lexus vehicles will be recalled in the U.S. to investigate a problem with a fuel-pressure sensor that has the potential to cause gas leaks. Company officials say the sensor’s improper installation could allow it to vibrate loose, causing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. The vehicles affected in the United States are:

*2006-07 Lexus GS300/350 sedans
*2006-09 Lexus IS250 sedans
*2006-early 2008 Lexus IS350 sedans

Toyota says it has not received any reports of accidents or deaths, but has had 75 complaints in North America and more than 140 in Japan. Dealers will inspect for leaks and, if none are discovered, re-torque the sensor. If a vehicle has already started to leak, the sensor gasket and line will be replaced.

The recall repairs will cost the company about $240 million.
