Ford Resists Larger F-150 Truck Recall

Federal regulators are asking Ford Motor Co. to expand its recall of F-150 pickup trucks.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief David Strickland said Wednesday the agency is in talks with Ford, and is pushing for more vehicles to be called back. Ford announced in February a recall of 135,000 F-150 trucks over concerns that air bags could deploy without cause. That number, however, is only a fraction of the 1.3 million vehicles the government asked ford to recall.

“Ford took great action and recalled about 135,000 vehicles,” Strickland said. “Our folks think that we would like to see something larger than that, and we’re in talks right now.”

The NHTSA has received 269 reports of air bag deployments in the 2004-2006 F-150 trucks, 98 of which involved injury to a driver or passenger.
