Honda Issues Fourth Defective Airbag Recall

Honda announced this week that it intends to issue a fourth recall to repair airbag defects in its 2001 and 2003 Acura vehicles.

Company officials say those vehicles previously recalled will be inspected to determine whether the original driver’s air bag module was replaced with a defective part. Honda found that some of the airbags in its vehicles could deploy with excessive pressure and cause injuries or fatalities.

The automaker issued a recall related to defective airbags in 2008 and more recalls were issued in 2009. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the issue soon after and urged Honda to expand the recall a third time in 2010.

Honda stated that the problem was caused by the degradation of propellant in older air bags, which could cause the air bags to violently deploy and send metal shrapnel tearing through the bag fabric.
