Ford agrees to fix 467,000 defective Taurus and Mercury Sable cars

In a statement made by Ford on June 21, an estimated 467,000 Taurus and Mercury Sable edition cars with engine cable design flaws will be inspected and repaired. The repairs will be done on cars until August 31 and will be conducted regardless of vehicle mileage.

As a response to Ford’s statement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which had been investigating the safety risk of the affected vehicles since October, discontinued its safety probe.

A recent NHTSA report stated that speed control cables exposed just under the hood of 2000-03 Taurus and Sable cars are easily susceptible to damage every time battery or air filter checkups are made. As a result, drivers were having difficulty braking or slowing down effectively.

Ford said it will reimburse expenses incurred by drivers for past repairs by the end of this year.
