Over 800,000 vehicles with airbag malfunction recalled by Toyota

A massive recall was launched by Toyota after they found a potential airbag issue that is caused by a leaking air conditioning condenser, as reported by the company on October 17.

The recall affects 803,000 recent models of Toyota Camrys, Avalons, Camry and Avalon Hybrids, and the Venza mid-sized SUVs, all of which may have an airbag malfunction issue due to a leaking A/C condenser. Toyota said in the recall that when the water leask from the condenser and reaches the airbag system unit, a short circuit may occur, either disabling the airbags or causing them to deploy when not needed.

Incidents in which the airbag of the affected vehicles accidentally launched have been reported to Toyota, in addition to two injuries related to the issue.

To address the potential airbag malfunction, dealers will seal the leaking condenser and put a cover between the condenser and the airbag control box.
